Benewah County, Idaho — River Country, Reservation Land and Timber Roads

Benewah County is where the St. Joe River, forested mountains, farm country and the Coeur d'Alene Reservation overlap.

St. County government is centered in St. Maries near the meeting of the St. Joe and St. Maries rivers. Joe and St. Maries rivers. Timber and river transportation made the city an industrial center, while roads radiating away from it climb quickly into terrain where communities can feel far more isolated than their mileage suggests.

South and west of St. Maries, reservation geography becomes central. The Coeur d'Alene Tribe's homeland and modern reservation institutions are not historical background to the county; they remain part of its political, cultural and economic life. Communities such as De Smet carry difficult histories involving missionary activity and Native education alongside present-tense tribal families and agriculture.

The county's northern and eastern communities reveal another transportation history. Saint Joe and Avery developed along river and railroad corridors where mountains dictated the available routes. Around Chatcolet and Benewah lakes, names such as Hawleys Landing and Silvertip Landing preserve an era when water access was practical transportation rather than merely recreation.
