Shoshone County, Idaho — The Silver Valley Was Built in a Canyon

Shoshone County is long, mountainous and constrained by river valleys, which is exactly why its communities developed the way they did.

Wallace carries the county's governmental role from a remarkably narrow piece of the Silver Valley along Interstate 90 and the South Fork Coeur d'Alene River. Mining made the corridor nationally important as silver, lead and zinc operations drew workers, railroads and investment into places where flat ground was scarce.

That scarcity produced unusually compact towns. Wallace, Kellogg, Osburn and Mullan fit between steep slopes and transportation infrastructure, while mines and mills occupied whatever additional space industry could claim.

The county's mining history is not merely picturesque. It brought prosperity, labor conflict and severe environmental consequences. Decades of mine and smelter activity contaminated parts of the Coeur d'Alene basin, leaving a cleanup legacy that remains part of the region's modern relationship with the river.

Elsewhere, Avery and Murray tell different mountain stories. Avery supported the Milwaukee Road deep in St. Joe country. Murray survived the decline of its early gold boom and remained inhabited.

Modern recreation has reused some of the same infrastructure. Rail corridors became trails, ski areas occupy mining country and visitors travel roads once dominated by industrial traffic.

Shoshone County's defining constraint has always been the canyon. Mining, railroads, highways and modern recreation have all had to negotiate for room inside it.
