Osburn, Idaho — Mining City in a Very Narrow Valley

Osburn occupies the South Fork Coeur d'Alene River valley between Wallace and Kellogg.

Lead, silver and zinc mining shaped the city and the broader Silver Valley. Mines climbed the surrounding mountains while railroads, roads, homes and businesses competed for the narrow strip of ground beside the river.

That prosperity came with a heavy environmental cost. Mine waste and smelting contamination moved through the river system for decades, eventually contributing to one of the largest Superfund cleanup efforts in the country.

Mining employment later declined, but Osburn remained an incorporated residential community.

The same geology that made the mountains valuable also dictated where people had to live below them. The valley is a compact record of extraction, transportation and cleanup stacked into the same corridor.
