Garfield County, Washington — One Small County Between Wheat and the Snake

Garfield County is one of Washington's least-populous counties, but its landscape operates at a much larger scale than the census suggests.

Pomeroy is the county's only incorporated city and its governmental center, surrounded by productive wheat country above the Snake River. It sits amid productive wheat country on the plateau above the Snake River, serving farms and ranches spread across long distances.

South of town, the land begins climbing toward the Blue Mountains. Communities such as Peola mark the transition as open grain country gives way to higher elevation, colder weather and forest. North and east, roads eventually descend toward the Snake River through steep canyon terrain.

That combination makes transportation deceptively complicated. Two addresses can belong to the same small county while sitting in very different topographic worlds.

Garfield County's rural localities also preserve an older agricultural geography. Names such as Pataha, Gould City and Mayview remain attached to districts where schools, stores and gathering places once had to be closer because travel consumed more time.

Modern machinery allows fewer households to work more acreage, but the agricultural landscape remains intensely productive.

Garfield County is small in government and population. In wheat fields, canyon depth and mountain horizon, there is nothing miniature about it.
