Spokane County, Washington — One County From Riverfront City to Wheat Country

Spokane County contains eastern Washington's largest urban center and, only a short drive away, landscapes that look unmistakably rural.

County government is centered in Spokane, the inland Northwest's regional metropolis. The Spokane River, railroads, mining wealth, timber and agriculture helped make it the commercial center of the inland Northwest. Downtown later performed an unusual act of reinvention: rail infrastructure was cleared from the riverfront for Expo '74, allowing the falls and river to become public space rather than industrial backstage.

East of Spokane, the City of Spokane Valley tells a different urban story. Neighborhoods and commercial districts existed for decades before residents finally voted to incorporate in 2002. North and south of the metropolitan core, unincorporated communities such as Fairwood, Chattaroy and Four Lakes show how quickly the county changes from suburb to acreage.

Farther south, Fairfield and surrounding districts belong to the Palouse agricultural landscape. Green Bluff, north of the city, demonstrates another adaptation: farms turned proximity to metropolitan customers into an advantage through U-pick fruit, seasonal events and direct sales.

That range matters. Spokane County cannot be described accurately as either urban or rural because it is aggressively both. A courthouse trip, a suburban address and a farmhouse can all belong to the same county while occupying very different practical geographies.

The Spokane River ties much of the population together. The roads leading away from it reveal how quickly the city gives the county back to forests and fields.
