Adams County, Washington — Dry Country Rewritten by Water

Adams County contains two agricultural landscapes occupying the same county.

Ritzville houses county government in unmistakable eastern Washington dryland wheat country. Railroads and grain shaped the city, while broad fields spread across a plateau where rainfall determines what can be grown without irrigation.

Travel west and south, however, and federal water infrastructure changes the equation. The Columbia Basin Project brought irrigation into parts of the county, allowing crops and settlement patterns impossible under dryland farming alone. Othello became the clearest expression of that transformation, growing into the county's largest city and an important agricultural processing center.

That creates a useful civic contrast. County government remains in Ritzville, rooted in the older railroad-and-wheat geography, while much of the county's modern population and intensive irrigated agriculture concentrate around Othello.

Smaller communities preserve both systems. Lind and Hatton belong to grain country. Areas nearer the irrigation network reveal greener fields and a more labor-intensive agricultural economy.

Adams County is therefore not simply “farm country.” It is a county where two different technologies of farming meet: one built around rainfall and wheat, the other around canals, pumps and imported river water.

The line between them can be visible from the road.
