Providence, Washington — Railroad Name That Outlived the Railroad Era

Providence sits in Adams County's dry wheat country, one of several small settlements that appeared as railroads crossed the plateau.

Steam-era railways needed infrastructure at intervals—sidings, water, stations and places to handle agricultural freight. Communities gathered around some of those points, creating a much denser constellation of names than the modern highway map suggests.

Many disappeared when rail operations changed and automobiles made larger towns easier to reach. Providence held on as a small inhabited locality.

The wheat country around it changed too. Farms became larger and more mechanized, so fewer families could work more ground.

Providence is therefore a survivor of two disappearing networks at once: the old railroad service pattern and the more densely populated farm landscape that grew alongside it.
