Clearwater County, Idaho — From River Canyon to High Forest

Clearwater County changes elevation fast enough to make neighboring communities feel as though they belong to different regions.

Orofino anchors county government along the Clearwater River at comparatively low elevation. The river corridor has long concentrated transportation, settlement and industry because the mountains leave little flat ground to spare.

Climb away from the river and the climate changes with the road. Communities such as Pierce and Weippe occupy higher country where forest and snow play much larger roles. Timber became central to the county's economy, while logging roads and mills tied remote uplands back to the Clearwater corridor.

The county also lies within the homeland of the Nimiipuu people. The Weippe Prairie carries particular historical importance as a place of Indigenous life and as the landscape where the Lewis and Clark expedition encountered Nimiipuu communities after crossing the Bitterroot Mountains.

Modern engineering added another layer. Dworshak Dam created an enormous reservoir on the North Fork Clearwater River, reshaping recreation, fish habitat and the physical landscape above Orofino.

Clearwater County is best understood vertically. River towns occupy the bottom. Forest communities sit above them. In Clearwater County, a road climbing away from the river is often climbing into a different climate, economy and way of life.
