Ahsahka, Idaho — Where a Dam Changed One Half of a Confluence

Ahsahka sits where the North Fork Clearwater meets the main Clearwater near Orofino.

That confluence mattered long before modern infrastructure. Rivers organized fishing, travel and settlement through otherwise difficult terrain.

Then Dworshak Dam transformed the North Fork.

Construction brought workers and economic activity; the completed dam backed a reservoir deep into the mountains.

It also blocked fish passage into the North Fork, profoundly altering waters important to the Nez Perce Tribe and regional fisheries.

The main Clearwater continues past the junction while the North Fork now arrives from behind one of America's tallest concrete dams.

Ahsahka still sits at a confluence. One of the rivers simply became a very different river.
