Grant County, Washington — A Desert County Reengineered Around Water

Grant County may be the clearest place in Washington to see what happens when engineers change the agricultural rules of an entire landscape.

Ephrata holds the county courthouse in dry central Washington country shaped by basalt, coulees and sparse natural rainfall. The Columbia Basin Project changed that environment without changing the climate: water diverted and pumped through a massive federal system turned selected ground into some of the state's most productive farmland.

Moses Lake grew into the county's largest city as irrigation, food processing and transportation expanded after World War II. Its enormous former military airfield added another kind of federal infrastructure, leaving runways useful for aircraft testing and training long after Larson Air Force Base closed.

Elsewhere, the project created stranger communities. Electric City grew beside Grand Coulee Dam with a name that sounds exactly like the era that built it. George was deliberately planned in the irrigated landscape and given a name designed to produce the inevitable “George, Washington” joke.

The county's water also supports recreation. Banks Lake occupies part of the Grand Coulee, while the Columbia and reservoir shorelines attract boating and fishing.

Then there is the Gorge Amphitheatre, where concert weekends can temporarily place tens of thousands of people beside otherwise quiet rural communities.

Grant County is not simply irrigated desert. It is a county repeatedly reshaped by projects large enough to manufacture farms, lakes, cities, runways—and occasionally a temporary metropolis.
