Douglas County, Washington — Wheat Above the River, Orchards Below It

Douglas County is divided by elevation almost as neatly as if somebody drew the agricultural zones with a ruler.

Waterville holds the county courthouse high on the plateau amid dryland wheat country. Farms there depend far more on rainfall than the irrigated orchards visible closer to the Columbia.

Drop toward the river and the economy changes. East Wenatchee and surrounding communities occupy terraces where irrigation supports fruit production and where growth from the Wenatchee metropolitan area has pushed housing onto former agricultural land.

The Columbia itself became one of the county's defining engineered landscapes. Chief Joseph Dam brought a massive federal hydroelectric project beside Bridgeport, while reservoirs and irrigation systems changed shorelines and supplied water far beyond the immediate river corridor.

The plateau preserves another kind of infrastructure history. Railroad branches once connected communities such as Withrow and Douglas with outside grain markets. Some tracks disappeared while the farms remained.

Even the geology refuses to be background. The Withrow Moraine marks the work of Ice Age glaciers across country now planted in wheat.

Douglas County can therefore change character in a single descent: dryland grain above, irrigated fruit below, and an engineered Columbia running between them.
