Beebe, Washington — Crossing Below Chelan

Beebe sits beside the Columbia near the mouth of the Chelan River, where the geography funnels roads toward one of the region's important river crossings.

Chelan lies just upstream along its own river valley. On the opposite side of the Columbia, highways open into Douglas County's orchard and plateau country. Beebe occupies the hinge between them.

Irrigation supports fruit growing on nearby benches, while steep slopes and the river limit where homes and roads can comfortably fit.

That makes transportation more important to Beebe's identity than any traditional downtown. The community exists in a place people have to pass through to move between very different pieces of north-central Washington.

Some towns grow around a square. Beebe grew around the problem of getting across the Columbia.
