Boundary County, Idaho — Idaho's Northern Doorway

Boundary County occupies the narrow northern end of the Idaho Panhandle, pressed between Washington, Montana and Canada.

Bonners Ferry anchors county government in the broad Kootenai Valley, where geography leaves relatively few transportation alternatives. The Kootenai River crosses the county while U.S. 95 follows the broad valley north toward the international boundary.

The valley floor is dramatically different from the mountains around it. Agriculture occupies reclaimed and productive lowlands near the river, while forested slopes rise toward the Selkirk and Cabinet ranges. Communities such as Naples and Moyie Springs sit along the corridors where roads can realistically pass through that terrain.

At Porthill, the road reaches Canada beside the Kootenai River. The border gives Boundary County an international dimension unusual for a county of its population: customs, cross-border travel and Canadian geography are ordinary practical concerns rather than distant federal abstractions.

The Kootenai Tribe of Idaho adds a much older political geography. Tribal history and modern institutions remain part of the valley, particularly around Bonners Ferry.

Boundary County's name sounds administrative, but the boundary is genuinely one of its defining facts. This is where Idaho runs out of north—and where roads, river and international border all have to fit through the same valley.
