Whitman County, Washington — Wheat Hills, University Towns and a County Built Across Distance

Whitman County looks simple from a distance: rolling Palouse hills, wheat fields and two university communities near the Idaho line. On the ground, the county is a collection of very different places connected by farm roads, creek valleys and long views.

Colfax holds the county courthouse along the South Fork Palouse River, near the middle of the county's transportation network. Pullman, farther east, grew into the larger population and institutional center around Washington State University. That creates a useful civic split: county government remains in Colfax while much of the county's modern population, research and student life concentrates in Pullman.

Outside those two cities, agriculture sets the scale. Towns such as Tekoa, Oakesdale, Rosalia, Endicott, St. John and Garfield developed as local centers for farms that could stretch for miles around them. Grain elevators can be larger than nearby neighborhoods because the infrastructure serves harvests, not just residents.

The landscape also carries stories that refuse to stay agricultural. Steptoe Butte rises abruptly enough above the Palouse that geologists adopted “steptoe” as a term for isolated older rock surrounded by younger lava. Malden's devastating 2020 fire turned rebuilding into part of the county's modern history. Oakesdale preserved much of the machinery inside its historic flour mill, while Tekoa's enormous railroad trestle found a second life along a recreational trail.

Whitman County is therefore best understood at two scales at once. Its cities and towns are small enough to know individually. The agricultural and institutional systems connecting them are enormous.
