Farmington, Washington — Farms Stayed Busy After the Town Got Quiet

Farmington incorporated in 1888 near the Idaho line, when a small town could be indispensable to farms spread across miles of Palouse country. Rail service gave growers a shipping point; stores and local institutions gave farm families a place to gather and do business.

The landscape never stopped working. The labor changed. Larger machinery allowed fewer people to manage more acreage, and better roads made other commercial centers easier to reach. Farmington's population declined while the surrounding fields remained intensely productive.

That is the useful contradiction here: a quiet town in a landscape doing an enormous amount of work. The farms stayed busy even after Main Street got quieter.
