Lamont, Washington — Full Municipal Government at Palouse Scale

Lamont sits in northern Whitman County amid Palouse grain country and is routinely counted among Washington's least-populous incorporated towns.

Its population may be modest, but incorporation carries the same basic responsibilities found in much larger places: streets, municipal decisions and a legal identity separate from the county around it.

Agriculture and transportation created the settlement, while mechanization later reduced the number of households required across surrounding acreage. Lamont nevertheless retained its city government.

That makes the community an interesting piece of civic geography: municipal independence operating at the intimate scale of neighbors who are likely to know exactly who is making the decisions.
