Rosalia, Washington — Battle Happened Before the Town

Rosalia's most important military history predates Rosalia.

In 1858, U.S. Army forces under Edward Steptoe entered country occupied by Spokane, Coeur d'Alene, Palus and other Indigenous peoples.

Near present-day Rosalia, Native warriors confronted the expedition and forced Steptoe's command into a nighttime retreat.

Later that year, Colonel George Wright returned with a larger punitive campaign, including the killing of hundreds of tribal horses to destroy mobility and economic power.

The modern town arrived later through railroads and wheat farming.

The Milwaukee Road eventually built a huge concrete arch bridge across Pine Creek nearby.

That railroad is gone too, but the bridge survives along the Palouse to Cascades trail corridor.

Rosalia inherited a landscape where transportation eras keep replacing one another.

Soldiers retreated on horseback.

Electric trains followed.

Bicycles are quieter.
