Endicott, Washington — Wheat Stayed While Everything Around It Modernized

Endicott grew because Palouse wheat needed somewhere to wait for a train.

Rail service concentrated elevators, stores, houses and local businesses at a shipping point surrounded by farms. The town incorporated in 1905 and became a compact center for families spread across miles of rolling grain country.

Then nearly every supporting technology changed. Trucks took over much of the hauling once done by rail. Cars made larger towns practical for shopping and services. Farm machinery allowed fewer people to work more acreage.

The crop, however, remained stubbornly successful.

That explains why Endicott can be smaller than its historic commercial buildings suggest while its elevators still dominate the skyline. The town did not lose its economic landscape. The landscape simply learned to operate with fewer people and different machines.
