La Crosse, Washington — Railroad Got There First

La Crosse began with railroad construction in 1888, before there was much town for the trains to serve.

Workers reportedly occupied temporary quarters while a settlement assembled around the new route. A store appeared, grain facilities followed and surrounding farmers began hauling wheat to the shipping point.

That sequence captures how quickly transportation could manufacture a Palouse town. Trucks later took over much of the grain movement, while improved roads connected farms with larger centers.

The railroad arrived before most of La Crosse. Wheat supplied the reason the community remained after rail stopped being the only practical way out.
