Garfield, Washington — Downtown Larger Than the Census Suggests

Garfield sits where Palouse farm country begins leaning toward northern Idaho's wooded foothills, and its downtown carries more architectural weight than the modern population might lead a visitor to expect.

Agriculture and rail transportation once generated enough local commerce to support substantial buildings. Brick replaced much of the earlier wooden commercial fabric, giving the center a permanence that outlasted the population boom.

Farm consolidation later reduced the number of households required across surrounding acreage, but Garfield remained incorporated, with schools, businesses and community institutions serving a rural district larger than the city itself.

The census makes Garfield look small. The old downtown remembers when its economic territory was much bigger.
