Palisades, Washington — Community With Basalt for Walls

Palisades lies along Douglas Creek inside a canyon cut through the Waterville Plateau.

The name is literal. Basalt cliffs rise around the narrow strip of road, farms and homes, giving the community a physical identity much stronger than any downtown ever could.

Water made the canyon usable. Agriculture occupied flatter ground near the creek, while dryland farming spread across the plateau above.

Roads follow the drainage because the alternative is climbing directly through steep basalt.

Palisades is therefore arranged by geology more than planning. The canyon supplies the walls, the creek supplies the corridor and the community occupies the room between them.
