Bridgeport, Washington — Dam Reversed the Town's Decline

By 1940, Bridgeport was losing population. Then the federal government decided to build an enormous hydroelectric dam almost next door.

Construction of Chief Joseph Dam brought workers, housing demand and infrastructure into a community that had been shrinking. The project also transformed the Columbia itself as Rufus Woods Lake backed up behind the new structure.

Bridgeport inherited both the temporary construction boom and the permanent federal facility, giving the town an economic anchor few communities of comparable size could manufacture on their own.

Many small towns spend decades trying to attract a major employer. Bridgeport had one arrive with enough concrete to change the river.
