Withrow, Washington — Glacier Left the Biggest Landmark

Railroads helped put Withrow on human maps. A glacier handled the larger construction project.

The Withrow Moraine marks a former edge of the Okanogan lobe of the Cordilleran Ice Sheet. Advancing and retreating ice piled rock and sediment into a ridge that still cuts across modern wheat country.

Settlement arrived on a much shorter timescale. The Great Northern's Mansfield branch connected farms with regional markets, supporting local businesses and institutions along the plateau.

Rail service eventually disappeared and the community became smaller. The moraine, predictably, did not care.

Withrow's railroad history is measured in generations. The largest structure in the neighborhood was left by ice.
