Ephrata, Washington — Courthouse Town Between Two Experiments With Water

Near Ephrata sits Dry Falls, a waterfall with no river.

During Ice Age floods, unimaginable volumes of water tore across the Columbia Plateau, carving coulees and a cataract several miles wide.

Then the floods stopped.

Ephrata developed later through ranching, rail transportation and county government, becoming the Grant County seat when the county was created in 1909.

Modern agriculture required another transformation of water.

The Columbia Basin Project later pumped river water uphill and distributed it across dry plateau country. Ephrata became an administrative center for that irrigation effort.

The county therefore contains two enormous demonstrations of moving water.

One happened catastrophically without human permission.

The other was engineered to grow crops.
