Ruff, Washington — Wheat Country Without Much Need for a Town

Ruff sits in Grant County's agricultural interior, surrounded by the kind of acreage that makes a settlement look tiny no matter how carefully it is drawn on a map.

Farming here changed dramatically during the twentieth century. Better machinery allowed fewer people to work more ground, while improved roads made it unnecessary to keep a store, school or shipping point within a few miles of every farm.

The countryside remained productive even as the population spread thinner. Grain fields, farm roads and widely separated homes now do most of the visual work around Ruff.

That history reverses the usual story of decline. A shrinking town footprint does not necessarily mean the surrounding economy stopped working. Sometimes it means the tractors got bigger.
