Soap Lake, Washington — Health Resort With Water That Feels Wrong

Soap Lake feels unusual before anyone explains the chemistry.

Its highly mineralized, alkaline water has a slick quality, and natural foam historically accumulated along the shore. The lake is also meromictic, meaning its deeper water does not regularly mix with the upper layer.

Indigenous traditions associated the lake with healing.

Later settlers turned that reputation into an industry.

Hotels, bathhouses and sanitariums promoted the water and mud for a remarkable range of ailments during the early twentieth century. Visitors arrived in large numbers, sometimes staying in tents or cars when rooms filled.

Medical fashion changed and the resort economy declined.

The extravagant cure claims belong to their era, and surviving records support some historical treatment proposals more clearly than later folklore does.

The chemistry is real regardless.

Soap Lake stopped being a medical destination long before the water stopped being strange.
