Krupp / Marlin, Washington — World War I Gave the Town an Alias

Krupp had an awkward name in 1918.

The small Grant County community shared it with the German Krupp industrial family, whose company manufactured weapons for Germany during World War I.

Amid anti-German sentiment, residents increasingly used Marlin instead.

Krupp never disappeared completely.

Modern maps and local usage preserve both names, leaving a tiny wheat-country community with the unusually bureaucratic identity Krupp / Marlin.

Railroad access and grain farming mattered far more to daily life than the naming dispute.

The First World War changed language and place names across the United States.

Here, it gave a very small town an alias.
