Moses Lake, Washington — Air Force Left a Runway Big Enough for Almost Anything

Moses Lake inherited an extraordinary piece of Cold War infrastructure.

Grant County International Airport's main runway stretches more than 13,000 feet.

Larson Air Force Base built the aviation complex for military aircraft, and its scale remained useful long after the base closed.

Large commercial airplanes now use the airport for testing and training.

The city itself grew through a different federal transformation.

Columbia Basin Project irrigation turned surrounding dry ground into intensive agriculture after World War II.

Food processing and regional commerce followed.

The lake's name reaches further back, honoring Moses, a Columbia leader who navigated the violent transformation of the region during the nineteenth century.

Moses Lake therefore has two enormous engineered systems in its modern story.

One moved water across a desert.

The other left enough runway for almost anything with wings.
