Electric City, Washington — Name Was the Sales Pitch

Electric City grew beside Grand Coulee Dam while one of America's largest public-works projects was turning the Columbia into a construction site.

The name made the promise explicit. Workers and businesses gathered around dam construction during the 1930s, producing several neighboring communities with different relationships to the federal project. Electric City incorporated in 1950.

Nearby Banks Lake later filled part of the Grand Coulee as a working reservoir for the Columbia Basin Project, giving the community recreation water created by an enormous irrigation machine.

“Electric City” sounds like 1930s futurism because it essentially is. The electrical age was being poured in concrete just down the road.
