Cardiff, Idaho — Prairie Hiding in Timber Country

Cardiff sits in Clearwater County's uplands, and the first surprise is how little it resembles the steep forest-and-river landscape many people associate with the county.

Open ground supports grain, hay and livestock. Forest waits nearby on slopes and in draws, putting two very different working landscapes within a short drive of one another.

That transition shaped rural settlement. Farms needed open acreage; timber work used the wooded country; roads connected households with Weippe, Pierce and Orofino.

Cardiff stayed small because neither industry required a dense town at that particular spot.

The locality is interesting precisely because it complicates the postcard version of Clearwater County. Follow the terrain uphill far enough and timber country can suddenly turn back into prairie.
