Hollywood, Idaho — No Boulevards, No Studios, Still Hollywood

Hollywood is a rural locality in Clearwater County, which means the name arrives with expectations the landscape has absolutely no intention of meeting.

There are upland farms, forest edges and country roads here—not film studios, palm trees or celebrity tour buses. Agriculture and timber shaped the district, while larger nearby communities handled most commerce.

The obvious question is how this particular patch of Idaho became Hollywood. Unfortunately, the surviving documentary record does not support a colorful origin story strongly enough to repeat one as fact.

That may be the better story anyway.

Somebody attached one of America's most glamorous place-names to working farm-and-timber country, and the name stayed. Hollywood, Idaho, has spent the rest of its existence declining to live up to the branding.
