Pierce, Idaho — Gold Rush That Wasn't Supposed to Be There

Pierce exists because gold was discovered where miners were not legally supposed to rush.

In 1860, Elias D. Pierce led a party into the Clearwater country and gold was found on land within the Nez Perce Reservation.

Thousands of miners followed anyway.

Stores, saloons and supply routes appeared almost immediately, while the influx intensified political pressure that contributed to the much smaller reservation defined by the 1863 treaty.

Pierce also acquired one of Idaho's earliest courthouses. The surviving wooden building is modest enough to make frontier government look appropriately improvised.

Gold eventually faded as the dominant industry. Timber took over, drawing logging operations and mills into the surrounding forests.

The courthouse remained.

Pierce is an unusually fitting monument to Pierce's beginning: a small government building from a moment when government was struggling to keep up with the people ignoring its own boundary.
