Ralston, Washington — Railroad Town Named for Health Food

Ralston has one of eastern Washington's stranger naming stories.

When the Milwaukee Road crossed Adams County in the early twentieth century, railroad vice president H. R. Williams reportedly named the station for a contemporary health-food brand.

A post office opened in 1908.

Residents expected the new rail line to bring substantial growth, and a large school reflected that confidence.

The future arrived at a smaller scale.

Wheat farming remained productive, but trucks, better roads and changes in rail service reduced the importance of small shipping points. The post office finally closed in 1974.

Many railroad towns were named for executives.

Ralston somehow ended up named for breakfast.
