Mead, Washington — Community Spokane Grew Toward

Mead began as an agricultural community north of Spokane.

Farms, rail access and rural roads shaped the original settlement, while schools became particularly important to families spread across the surrounding district. The Mead name eventually attached itself to one of the region's major school systems.

Then Spokane kept moving north.

Subdivisions, commercial corridors and large institutions spread into what had been open farm country. Mead never incorporated, so the community became increasingly suburban without acquiring a city government or a neat municipal edge.

Today the name does several jobs at once. It can mean the historic community, a postal identity, the school district or the broad suburban-rural zone north of Spokane.

The farms did not disappear on a particular Tuesday. The city simply spent decades getting closer.
