Glenrose, Washington — Where Spokane Starts Becoming the Palouse

Glenrose occupies rising ground southeast of Spokane where suburban streets begin giving way to farms.

For generations, agriculture used the open prairie while roads connected rural households with the city below.

Spokane's growth changed the pressure on that land.

Homes climbed the hills. Subdivisions appeared among fields and wooded draws. Commuting made acreage attractive to people whose livelihoods had nothing to do with farming.

The transition remains unusually visible.

A residential street can end near wheat ground that looks more like Whitman County than metropolitan Spokane.

Glenrose is not quite suburb and not quite Palouse farm country.
