Latah, Washington — Where the Palouse Starts Growing Trees

Latah sits in southeastern Spokane County near the transition between rolling Palouse farm country and the wooded hills and creek valleys farther east.

Agriculture built the town. Grain farms spread across productive ground, and rail transportation connected those harvests with outside markets.

The setting, though, is more varied than a simple wheat-town description suggests. Latah Creek and its tributaries cut through the surrounding terrain, while forest becomes increasingly visible toward the uplands.

Modern farm machinery reduced the number of people required on surrounding acreage, and better roads made Spokane easier to reach. Latah remained incorporated but small.

The town occupies a geographic hinge: wheat dominates one view, timber begins entering the next.
