Pataha, Washington — Creek Kept the Name Alive

Pataha makes more sense as a rural district than as a town missing its buildings. Pataha Creek cuts through farm country near Pomeroy, providing a natural corridor through otherwise dry southeastern Washington terrain. Indigenous travel through the region long preceded the farms and roads that later followed workable ground.

When travel was slower, scattered families depended more heavily on nearby schools, postal stops and gathering places. Better roads gradually shifted those functions toward larger communities, but the farms and households did not vanish.

The creek supplied something more durable than a business district: continuity. Institutions came and went. Pataha remained the name for the country around the water.
