Wardner, Idaho — Mining Neighborhood Up the Hill

Wardner climbs the steep ground above Kellogg in the heart of the Silver Valley.

Its location makes much more sense if you imagine life before routine automobile commuting. Mines and industrial facilities were uphill, so worker housing followed the work even when the available ground was inconveniently steep.

Wardner became closely tied to the Bunker Hill mining complex and the labor history of the district.

As mining employment declined, Kellogg became the stronger commercial center and Wardner's population thinned.

The old physical logic remains visible in the streets.

Workers lived uphill because their jobs were uphill. Northern Idaho mining towns rarely had the luxury of pretending topography was optional.
