Calder, Idaho — Timber Country Along the St. Joe

Calder sits beside the St. Joe River in southern Shoshone County, deep in a valley where the mountains leave very little ambiguity about where roads and communities can go.

Timber shaped the economy. Logging roads reached into the surrounding forests, rail lines and trucks moved wood through the valley, and workers lived close to the operations that employed them.

Forestry eventually required fewer people, but Calder did not disappear. Recreation and fishing added new traffic to a river corridor still surrounded by working forest.

The St. Joe remains the organizing feature. Houses, roads and industry occupy the narrow ground beside it because the mountains are considerably less accommodating.

Calder is one of those places where the street map looks less like urban planning than a negotiation with topography.
