Adair, Idaho — Small Community Inside the Silver Valley Machine

Adair lies in Shoshone County within the industrial geography of the Silver Valley.

Mining created more than famous towns such as Wallace and Kellogg. Mines, rail lines, worker housing and access roads produced smaller inhabited places throughout the Coeur d'Alene River basin.

Adair was one of them.

The surrounding mountains yielded extraordinary quantities of lead, silver and zinc, while the same industrial system left serious environmental damage downstream.

Modern cleanup, reduced mining employment and changing transportation reshaped the valley without erasing every small locality created during its industrial peak.

Adair's story is therefore not a separate mining epic. It is a small piece of the much larger machine that once filled this valley with ore, workers and rail traffic.
