Silverton, Idaho — Houses Below the Mines

Silverton occupies a narrow stretch of the South Fork Coeur d'Alene River valley between Osburn and Wallace.

The name gives away the reason people settled here. Mines climbed into the surrounding mountains while worker housing, rail lines, roads and businesses competed for the limited flat ground along the river.

That produced a distinctly linear community. There was never much room for a tidy street grid because canyon geography had already assigned most of the available space.

Mining later declined from its peak, but Silverton remained part of the connected chain of Silver Valley communities.

Cleanup from historic mine waste added another chapter. Metals moved downstream through the same river corridor that organized settlement in the first place.

Silverton's geography makes the relationship unusually visible: the mines are uphill, the houses are below them, and the river carries the history past both.
