Gold Creek, Idaho — Place-Name Left Behind by Prospectors

Gold Creek carries one of the least ambiguous names in northern Idaho.

During the mining rushes of the nineteenth century, prospectors searched creek beds throughout the Coeur d'Alene country for placer deposits. Their optimism left names scattered across the map—Gold Creek, Silver this, Mineral that—even where the resulting settlement never became substantial.

Gold Creek stayed small while richer and more durable operations elsewhere in the Silver Valley attracted capital and workers.

Forest and rural homes now define the locality more than prospecting does.

The name is essentially a fossil from the rush: evidence of what people hoped was in the ground, preserved long after mining stopped being the main reason anyone lived there.
