Saint Joe, Idaho — River Is the Address

Saint Joe makes more sense as a river community than a town.

The St. Joe River cuts through forested northern Idaho before reaching Lake Coeur d'Alene, creating a natural transportation corridor through country where mountains make alternatives expensive. The watershed lies within the homeland of the Coeur d'Alene people.

Logging camps, railroads and timber operations later followed the same geography. Modern roads, recreation, forestry and scattered residences still orient themselves around the drainage.

There is no missing downtown to explain. In Saint Joe, the river performs the organizing work that streets do elsewhere.
