Fernwood, Idaho — A Timber Community in the St. Maries Headwaters

Fernwood sits in heavily forested eastern Benewah County, far from the open prairie around Plummer and Tensed and closer in character to the upper St. Maries River country.

Logging and sawmills supplied much of the community's economic reason for growth. Forest roads and rail connections moved workers and equipment into the surrounding timber, then carried wood products toward larger markets.

Mechanization and mill consolidation reduced the number of workers required, but forestry did not disappear from the landscape. Homes and small businesses remain surrounded by working forest, while public-land access adds hunting and recreation to local life.

Fernwood's identity has always come from the trees around it. Unlike northern Idaho's lake communities or Palouse farm towns, its defining resource was standing on the hills before the first streets arrived.
