Wayland, Idaho — Community Built at Timber-Country Scale

Wayland lies in Benewah County's forested interior, where logging and scattered rural settlement historically mattered more than anything resembling urban growth.

Families lived along roads threaded through timber country, sometimes combining forestry work with small farms or other rural livelihoods. St. Maries and Plummer supplied the larger commercial centers.

Modern logging requires fewer workers than it once did, and better roads make longer trips ordinary. That stripped many tiny localities of the stores, schools and service points they once needed nearby.

Wayland remained as the population spread thinner.

Its scale makes sense once you stop looking for a downtown. In timber country, the community may be the road, the neighboring households and several miles of forest between them.
