Chatcolet, Idaho — Lake Whose Shoreline Was Rewritten by a Dam

Chatcolet lies at the southern end of Lake Coeur d'Alene within Heyburn State Park and the Coeur d'Alene Reservation.

Historically, Chatcolet Lake was more distinct from the larger lake system. Post Falls Dam raised regional water levels, altering shorelines and connecting lower lakes and river channels more closely.

From shore, the result can look entirely natural.

The water also carries much older significance. The wetlands and lake system remain culturally important to the Coeur d'Alene Tribe and ecologically important for fish and wildlife.

Modern campgrounds, trails and boating added another layer of use.

Chatcolet is a landscape where ancient watershed geography, Indigenous continuity and twentieth-century engineering are all visible in the same waterline.
