De Smet, Idaho — Mission Is Part of the Story, Not the Owner of It

De Smet lies on the Coeur d'Alene Reservation in Benewah County farm country, where Catholic missionary activity helped shape the modern settlement but cannot be allowed to own its history.

A mission and school served reservation families within broader federal and religious efforts to reshape Indigenous language, culture and family life. That history is inseparable from the coercive policies surrounding Native education in the United States.

The community continued beyond those institutions. Homes, agriculture, tribal families and modern reservation life remain part of De Smet's present-tense landscape.

The mission explains part of how the settlement took its current form. It does not explain everything that came before—or everything that survived it.
