Rover, Idaho — Station Disappeared Before the Name Did

Rover lies west of Santa in the forested interior of Benewah County.

Older records call it Rover Station, a reminder of the Milwaukee Road line that once threaded through the St. Maries-to-Bovill timber country. By the late 1970s, railroad records listed Rover as a non-agency station with no station population—a fairly strong hint that its transportation importance had already evaporated.

The locality itself proved more durable.

Scattered settlement remained associated with the Rover name after the railroad stopped giving the place much reason to appear on a timetable.

That is a common northern Idaho story in miniature. The tracks and stations once organized these forests; roads eventually took over. Rover survived not as a railroad town, but as the name left behind when the railroad moved on.
