Zillah, Washington — Giant Teapot Started as a Political Joke

Zillah's best-known landmark began as a joke about federal corruption—and also as a place to buy gasoline.

In 1922, businessman Jack Ainsworth built a service station shaped like a teapot after the Teapot Dome scandal became national news. The building survived long after the scandal stopped being everyday conversation and was eventually moved and restored.

Around it, Zillah developed in irrigated agricultural country producing fruit, hops and later wine grapes. Wine tourism added another layer to an economy still visibly rooted in farming.

The teapot works because it is not random roadside kitsch. It is a century-old political joke that somehow kept its building permit.
