Wapato, Washington — Name Is a Food, Just Not a Potato

Wapato sounds enough like “potato” to invite the wrong assumption.

The name refers to an Indigenous wetland plant with edible tubers, traditionally gathered as food.

That history predates the modern city by generations.

Wapato later developed within the Yakama Indian Reservation as rail transportation and irrigation expanded lower-valley agriculture.

Hops, fruit and vegetables created intensive demand for labor.

Mexican and other Latino families became central to that economy and to the permanent community, reshaping businesses, schools and public life.

Municipal government exists within a much older reservation geography.

The name remembers food gathered before irrigation agriculture arrived.

And no, it still does not mean potato.
